Tell us about yourself — who is Essia Ben Ayed?

I’m Essia, artist, entrepreneur, founder of Monokiini, and above all, a deep lover of the world around me. I’m someone who finds beauty everywhere and cherishes the small pleasures of everyday life. Art has always been part of who I am. I grew up in the world of classical ballet, and ever since, creating and feeling inspired have been essential to my balance. For me, it’s all in the details, from my morning coffee to the ring I slip on before starting my day, especially my Twenty Compass pieces. These little rituals fuel my creativity and remind me to find beauty in simplicity.

What’s the story behind launching Monokinii?

Monokiini is an artistic project that was born during the pandemic. Initially, it was a way for me to clear my mind and spend time alone with my ideas and creativity. I wanted to escape reality and create with my hands. Over time, I trained myself, honed my skills, and shortly after, I left my 9-to-5 to fully dedicate myself to this beautiful project, which continues to grow and evolve. I’m fortunate to have found a passionate team who believes in Monokiini as much as I do ! <3

What does a typical day in your studio look like?

My days at the studio are never the same! I juggle managing team members in their various tasks, client meetings, coordinating pottery classes with production, and creating. With the business growing, it’s challenging to stay hands-on with the material, it’s a lot for one person, but I trust that everything will find its balance soon.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Monokiini pieces stand out for their curves, inspired by the waves and the sea. For me, it’s therapeutic and brings me a sense of well-being. Sunlight also plays a huge role in my daily life and sparks my creativity. Whether it’s for pottery or for my creativity in general, I find that so much beauty is born from shadows and the interplay of light.

How would you describe your personal style?

It’s the perfect harmony and blend that truly speaks to me, striking the balance between bold statement pieces like bags, jewelry, and hair accessories while keeping my overall wardrobe timeless, versatile, and effortlessly chic.

What trends are you into this season?

I looooove anything made of mohair! I find it elegant and timeless.

What is your favorite Twenty Compass piece at the moment?

Without a doubt, the chunky terracotta necklace. It’s a statement piece that adds a pop of color and elevates any outfit.
